Evaluate research on conformity to group norms

Conformity:

Conformity is the tendency to adjust one’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviour in ways that are in agreement with those of a particular individual or group, or with accepted standards about how a person should behave in specific situations.

Informational Influence: people are influenced by others because of a desire to be correct and obtain accurate information

Normative Influence: people are influenced by others to gain rewards or avoid punishment

Referent Informational Conformity: an individual identifies with a particular in-group and conforms to group norms, to increase similarities and increase out-group differences.

*these influences can occur simultaneously.

Ethically Focused Research

Asch (1951)

Zimbardo (1961)

Justification

Is research into conformity worth the stress it places people under?

  • Asch – deception but does not harm
  • Zimbardo – caused harm
